Who knew that kids could have so much fun with a bunch of gold-painted rocks?

For this event:

I spray-painted a bunch of rocks (all sizes and shapes) gold.

Purchase aluminum foil pans and poke small holes in the bottom.

Fill a cattle tank, kiddie pool, or any large tub or tote with water.

Add approx 3" of sand to the bottom

Add several hands full of unpainted gravel and rocks

Add your gold rocks.

Kids will pan for gold by dipping their pan down into the water and sand and then bringing it back up to allow the water to rush out the bottom. Kids will also shake their pans so that the sand will wash out through the holes.

Provide a sack or container for each child to collect their gold.

Such a simple event that had a huge impact on the kids. :)

Have a couple of western games ready in case you need them before or after the gold panning event. We played a few before the event however, I think they would have panned for gold all evening...who knew?
