Holy Week - Family Selfie Adventure
Journey with Jesus!
Family Selfie Easter Adventure
Want a fun and unique way to teach your children and families the true meaning of Easter? Why not send them on a Family Selfie Adventure!
Families will journey through the Bible, recreate events, read scripture, and solve tasks to unlock the beautiful story of Jesus' love and sacrifice for each of us.
I have given the scavenger hunt several tweaks to make it adaptable to any church size or budget. It's like building your own "custom fit" adventure.
Select the options that work for you and host your very own Family Selfie Adventure.
We’ve all got our smartphones in hand; why not put them to good use and use them to tell the story of Easter?
This family-oriented selfie adventure will help parents and kids engage with Christ while spending quality time together. After each family solves their riddle/clue/task they will take a selfie together with the object/location that they found. Encourage them to be creative!
At the end of the hunt, not only will they have had fun, they will have faith-filled memories and seven new family pictures to add to their album.
The object of the adventure is to open a different egg each day and solve the task, read the suggested scripture and then take a selfie of their family with their completed task.
Families will learn about Jesus while creating family memories.
There are several different ways in which you can create and participate in the "Family Selfie Adventure." There is an adventure to fit any size church and any budget.
Let's Get Started!
Recruit help from your ladies/men's groups to help prepare for this event. This is a great multi-generational project with wonderful fellowship possibilities. Provide a few snacks and call it a "stuffing the egg" party. Many hands make light work!
Prep Work:
-
Stuff 7 different colored plastic eggs with the 7 different clues/activities. Each colored egg MUST contain the correct clue for that day for the event to run correctly. (Downloadable clues and the egg colors will be at the bottom of the page.)
-
Purchase Easter baskets, Easter buckets, or even plain color lunch bags. (One per family)
-
Purchase a few bags of Easter grass to go inside each basket/bucket/bag.
-
(Optional) If you have any "after Easter" donations that have been taking up valuable storage space, this is the time to use them up.
Assembly:
-
Place a handful of Easter grass into the bottom of your baskets/buckets/or bags
-
Place the 7 different colored eggs inside the baskets/buckets/bags
-
(Optional) Place any "after Easter" donation items that you have received inside the baskets/buckets/bags. This is a great way to get rid of donated items that have been taking up valuable storage space.
-
Attach an information flyer to each basket/bucket or bag
-
On Palm Sunday (or whenever you choose) pass out one basket/bucket/bag to each family.
Promote:
-
Using the Facebook/Website Slides (Downloads at the bottom of the page). Start posting the upcoming event ASAP.
If you want to stop here then your families will enjoy a wonderful week together...following in Jesus' footsteps. However, you can easily take it a step further with very little effort!
Take it a Step Further - Outreach
Take your event a step further by opening it up to the public via Facebook.
You will not need to make baskets/buckets/bags for those who join you via Facebook...however, it would still be a wonderful thing to do for your church families.
This step is as easy as downloading the clues/activity slides (FREE downloads at the bottom of the page) and programming them to post each morning on your Facebook page.
HOW IT WORKS!
-
Select a date to begin your scavenger hunt. Palm Sunday is a great time to begin however, you can back it up a few days if you don't want your event to end on Easter Sunday.
-
Using the free download "event announcement slide", start promoting your event ASAP on Facebook
-
Ask your families to share the post with their family and friends...outreach!
-
Download the clue/activity slides and program them to automatically post each morning (on your event dates)...or post them each morning.
-
Make sure that everyone knows that your event is open to the PUBLIC and that there are PRIZES (optional) being given away! I filled two 5 gallon buckets with candy, egg dying kits, stuffed animals, dyeable eggs, etc., and awarded prizes to two families.
-
If you want people to play along from anywhere in the U.S. consider offering gift card prizes.
-
Promote, promote, promote your upcoming event...look for free community Facebook sites to share your slide, send home flyers, pass out flyers to everyone at the end of service, send flyers home with kids if they are allowed to pass them out at school...promote, promote, promote!
-
A week or so before the event, host a Facebook blast with your church members. Simply post your flyer on your Facebook page (or church page) on a certain Sunday and have your church family log onto your page and share your flyer all at the same time (right before service begins if possible...or the end)
-
Participants will log on, read the clue/task, complete it, take a family selfie.
-
Families will share their selfies in the comment section on that day's Facebook clue post to be eligible for the prizes.
-
Prizes will be awarded to the family/families with the best-submitted selfie pics...must have solved and submitted all 7 tasks selfies
-
All of your "church families" may not be on Facebook so make sure to provide a way for them to submit their pics to you.
If you are taking your event to this level, remember that your church families are also included in this event. They will also take selfies and submit them each day. They will also be eligible for the prizes at the end of the week.
CLUES FOR OPTIONS 1-6:
Clue #1 (YELLOW EGG) Birth – Luke 2:6-12
This story begins in a different way
The Baby Jesus was sleeping on Hay
He was the Messiah, God’s Only Son
But His journey began as a quiet, humble one…
With your family, find a barn or manger and take a selfie together beside it. Think about what it meant that Jesus wasn’t born rich or mighty, but as a humble baby, just like us. Talk about why that is important to us as we follow Him.
Clue #2 (BLUE EGG) Baptism – Matthew 3:13-17
As He grew, he gained respect from God and man
And His calling to save us, He began to understand
He declared He came to set the captives free
And was baptized by John to begin that journey.
John the Baptist baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. See if you can find a stream, a pool, a river, anything with water for your family selfie. Take some time to think about what happened when Jesus was baptized, how God spoke from heaven and what John said about Him.
Clue #3 (Red Egg) Ministry – Matthew 4:18-20
Jesus began to teach all the people
They’d come to hear him, no building or steeple
He’d talk in the mountains and down by the sea
And to those who would listen, He’d say “Come, follow me!”
Jesus went to places where people were to talk to them about God’s Love. If Jesus were here today, where do you think he would teach? Take a picture of your family in the place you thought of and write down a little explanation of why you picked that place!
Clue #4 – (Orange Egg) Miracles
Many people came to Jesus in need
Some sick and some lame, some broken indeed
And often Jesus would heal, touch or feed
News of Him spread around Israel with speed
There are many stories of Jesus’ miracles in the Bible. With your family pick your favorite story and read it together. There are several ways to take your family selfie – you can all point to the Scripture reference and take a pic; you can re-enact the story and take a pic, or you can take a video of your family reading or telling the story!
Clue #5 – (Green Egg) Last Supper – Matthew 26:20-30
But some of the people did not like God’s Son
And started a plan to get rid of the One
So Jesus gathered his friends for a Passover meal
And shared what would happen; it seemed so unreal
During the Last Supper, Jesus explained that he would die and rise again, but the disciples didn’t understand his words. It was here that Jesus first described communion – the bread representing His body and the juice representing his blood. After this, he left and went to the Garden of Gethsemane to pray before the soldiers came to arrest him. With your family, go find a garden or a patch of flowers. Take your picture together and consider how just a few weeks ago this ground was cold and dead, but today there is hope and new life. Jesus came that we might have a new life and have it for all eternity!
Clue #6 (Purple Egg) Crucifixion – Matthew 27:32-56*
Betrayed by a friend, Jesus was arrested
He was tried by a court and his death was requested
On that saddest of days, our Savior did die
But within that dark moment, our salvation did lie
When Jesus died on the cross, his disciples and his friends lost all hope. But God had a bigger plan. A beautiful plan that was way bigger than they could see at that moment. We remember the cross as a place of suffering but also as a place of hope for all eternity. With your family, find a cross and take your picture and talk about how we can have hope in Jesus.
*Parents, this can be a difficult subject to approach with children. You know your kid’s best and what is the best way to share this part of the story. While I have included the Scripture reference, use your discernment and discretion when you share.
Clue #7 (Gold Egg ) Resurrection – Luke 24:1-12
Some may think that our story is done.
But they would be wrong! It has only begun!
For after 3 days, Jesus rose from the dead
To give us New Life forever…just as He said!
Our greatest hope comes in knowing that we will get to spend all of eternity with Jesus and with all who follow him! We don’t have to be slaves to sin. Jesus can help us to live with joy and life now. That is what Easter is all about! Take a picture of your family celebrating with GREAT JOY that Jesus is ALIVE!
